Moderately Frustrated

Okay. I’ll admit it. Maybe I’m not the best Republican by today’s standards.

(I guess it depends on your region.)

I’m most definitely a fiscal conservative and maybe 60% socially conservative. By my own standards, that’s pretty Republican.

That said…(I hate this phrase. Unfortunately, it almost always captures the right tone.)

I read a New York Times article this morning on things to watch in tonight’s GOP debate. Before we proceed, it should be noted I don’t yet have a horse (an elephant?) in this race.

The first thing mentioned was Romney’s religion.

I hate that some people are making this a relevant subject. In an even more general sense, why is any candidate’s religion relevant? It seems almost Animal Farm-esque. All faiths are equal, but some are more equal than others. One belief in Christ is far superior than another.

How can that be? It seems like “religious competition” should be an oxymoron. Yet, that always seems to happen in primaries. Candidates trying to out-righteous each other. Kind of déclassé and an obvious pander if you ask me.

And since you’re reading this, the assumption is you asked me.

For that matter, I don’t even believe all liberals are vile human beings. Look, we all have different views. It’s okay. Seriously, it’s okay. Calm down. Accept it. Not saying they’re always right, but I eyeroll when a person makes a comment that’s childish about an opposing view. Sometimes people act like it’s a BFD if you disagree.

That’s why Webster made a dictionary, in my opinion. Long ago people were discounting opposition as “idiots”, so Noah Dubya made a book of all kinds of intelligent, cool words for you to use instead.

I don’t believe most sensible people would believe in policy that causes harm, yet that’s exactly what people imply about opposing viewpoints. I believe both parties do honestly think they’re doing what’s best. Perhaps my optimism is just a result of a malfunctioning frontal lobe.

We seem to forget it’s okay for people to think differently from us. I have been enlightened, and you just don’t get it.

(That how people come to have blogs. But I digress…)

I find it interesting (and totally expected) that both sides preach economy, economy, economy, yet allow these sideshows to continue. Perhaps more accurately, that each side thinks it’s higher & mightier on the economy and the other side is playing games. Newsflash: You both are playing games.

I’m tired of politics as usual, so it’s been tough to choose a candidate to endorse. It’s hard to find genuine thought among all of the pandering. And sometimes it’s hard to find a person to speak about his or her chosen candidate without denigrating other candidates to do it.

I expect candidates to sling mud at each other, but I believe it is the job of the grassroots to positively promote their candidates of choice. If your reason to support Candidate X is “because Candidate Y is an idiot and you’re clearly misinformed if you’re supporting Candidate Y”, then I have to wonder what your candidate really has to offer.

All I ask is for some sense. Some sanity. Let’s support whoever we want to support without assuming all opposition is worthless. Too often Facebook threads become a contest to prove who can make the most pointless point. You can spend all day replying and saying your candidate is best, but ultimately you’re just talking to people who are just as earnest about their own candidates. You should be out talking to undecided people.

Is that too much to ask?
